ネット世代のビジネスモデルとは？

　CNET Japanの梅田さんの「インターネット世代論」。多くのコメントやトラックバックの反応にあるように私も世代論でくくるのは好きではないのだが、これは梅田さんの確信犯的な表現だろうと思っているので、まあ置いておくとして。
　彼の発言の真意を掴めているかはわからないが、私はポイントは「ネットに対する関わり方の深さで新しい技術やシステムに対する発想そのものが変化してきている」ということなんだろうと思っている。それを見過ごしているか、意識的にかろうじて気づき始めている人たちを「旧世代」とか「PC世代」と呼び、逆にむしろ無意識なぐらい当たり前に順応している人たちを「新世代」とか「ネット世代」という表現であらわしているということだろう。

　ただ私見としては、この梅田さんのブログがCNET Japanに経営コンサルタンティングというお立場から投稿されているものであることを考えると、失礼ながらあえて一言余計なことをいいたくなってしまう。「では、ネット世代の中でのビジネスモデルとは？」と

　ネットというものとの関わり方でビジネスとして難しい部分は「無償であることを基本とした構造」であることだと思っている。梅田さんのブログでも繰り返しでてきているGoogle。現在のシリコンバレーの怪物企業の一つだが、彼らが企業として現在、大成している意味は一点だけなような気がする。「検索技術という自社の武器を広告と組み合わせてビジネスにすることに成功している」ということだ。そしてこのビジネスモデルは彼ら自身のオリジナルの発想ではない。このモデルに彼らが持っている超一流の検索技術が組み合わさったために成功しているだけだ。もちろん技術的な側面から考察した場合、Googleは非常に魅力的な技術を備えた企業であることは間違いない。その発想も含めて語るべきことはたくさんあるだろう。

　ただ、梅田さんの記事へのトラックバックの中で、Programmer'sEye さんがGoogleのことにも触れていて、「人が集まれば、ビジネスモデルは後から付いてくる」という方をしているが、これは本当に真実だろうか？

　素人の感想で的を得てないかも知れないが、ネットビジネスの一番難しいところは、「どうお金にするの？」という部分だと思う。インターネット企業の大型IPOの先駆けでもあり、第一次ネットバブルの象徴でもあるネットスケープ社の最終的な失敗はマイクロソフト社の障壁も大きかっただろうが、私はもっとも根本的な問題は「どうすればお金が入ってくるのか」という洞察が欠けていたことではないかと思っている。「物を売る」これは一番わかりやすい儲け方である。しかし、インターネットの世界ではソフト・コンテンツを有料で流行させることは極めて難しくなっている。Googleも検索ソフトを売って儲けているわけではなく、そこに企業からの広告を（ポップアップ広告のような違和感なく）加えることに成功し、スポンサー料で儲けているわけだ。形は新しいかもしれないが、TVの広告と仕組みは一緒である。では、ネットの中で活きる「広告」以外のビジネスモデルはどんなものがあるのだろうか。
　単にネットを趣味やツールの一部としてみなすのであれば、別にどうでもよいのだろうが、梅田さんのブログを常々読んでいると、彼はネットというものにもっと大きな価値観を見出そうとしているように見える。

　ネットにおける価値創造のあり方としてよく取り上げられる意見に「共有思想」や「オープンソース文化」といったものがある。確かにこうした視点に立っているとそれまでにない新しい発想や仕組み、システムが出てくる可能性には私自身期待したいと思っている。これに関してやはりCNETの渡辺さんのちょっと前のブログでは、インドのオープンソース・コミュニティを引き合いに出している。

（引用）なるほど、と目を引いたのが、インドで昔から行われていた農作民の風習である。集落などコミュニティ内部で、定期的に集まっては育て方の知恵や強い品種の種を交換しているのだという。互いに交換しあうことが当然と認識されているので、当然、種子やノウハウに所有権も特許も発生しない。コミュニティに蓄積する共有財産と見做され、特定個人の独占権は発生しない。

　これは、確かに社会全体を向上されるうえで有効なシステムである。ただし、このシステムとインターネットなどにおける共有思想とは残念ながら、一つ大きな違いがあるような気が自分の中に残っている。せこい言い方だが、「それで食べていけるかどうか」ということだ。インドの農業における知恵の共有は、それが生産量の向上につながり、みんなが食べていけるようになる。しかし、ネット上での知恵の共有は知的な満足感、向上といった意味では進歩するかもしれないが、そこで対価として収入を得るシステムが見えてこない。まして食べ物が得られるわけでもない。趣味の世界ではなく、仕事として関わり方が非常に見えにくいのだ。

　本文は、ネットのあり方に対して否定的なように受け取られてしまうかもしれないが、私自身の心情はむしろ逆で、ネットによる生活の変革には非常に期待している。ただ、自らの無知さをさらすようで恥ずかしい限りだが、上記の疑問に対する純粋な答えなり、見解が欲しいのだ。私自身はSE（というかネットワークシステムやソフトウェアよりの技術者）ではないが、先のProgrammer'sEye さんのエントリにもあるように、「面白い技術をいかにビジネスにするか」という部分に無自覚である技術者というのは結構多い気がしている。
　こうした疑問に解を出すのが、IT関連の経営コンサルタントというお仕事なのではないかと勝手に想像しているので、「ネットとビジネス」の関わりのあり方についてさらに深い考察を梅田さんには期待したい。
